The smattering of laughter that greeted his dire warning was Willa’s only clue that he was jesting. He was good at being in charge. She could tell his employees both respected and adored him, and that wasn’t something that happened over night. It was something a person had to earn.

She glanced up at Angel again, seeing him with different eyes. Somewhere along the way, he’d grown up. He was a man to be reckoned with now. She’d be wise to remember it. He certainly hadn’t hesitated to set her straight in his office a few minutes ago.

“If your lordship is finished with his opening remarks, may I take the reins and gallop with them?” she teased in a low voice.

He regarded her soberly. “You may.” His expression seemed to be begging her not to disappoint him. She couldn’t wait to prove to him he wasn’t the only one who’d grown up. She’d developed a few people skills of her own in the past several years.

“Thank you.” She spun back to the stage in a swirl of blue velvet. “You and you.” She pointed to the two workmen. “Come on down. I’d like to speak with you first.”

With a quick glance of affirmation in Angel’s direction, they complied and climbed down their ladders. They approached her with mildly abashed expressions as if fearing a lecture.

She treated each of them to smiles full of morning sunbeams. “I love what you’re doing with the light strands. It will look like a sky with a thousand stars when you are finished. Why don’t you run through the list of tasks you have left to complete?”

She listened to each item with a slight frown of intensity, nodding and asking questions here and there. “Here is what I would like for you to focus on next. Let’s finish building the manger backstage, and go ahead and repair that broken light while you’re at it.”

“We’re so sorry about that, ma’am,” one of them muttered.

“You’re human. Mistakes will happen,” she returned. “For that reason, I think it’s best to hang the lights during the actors’ breakout sessions off stage. It’ll be safer to work on the lighting when there aren’t so many people standing in your way. And don’t worry. I’ll make sure you have the time you need on an empty stage to do so.”

The second made nodded gratefully. “We’d be much obliged for that, ma’am.”

She waved the man playing the part of Gabriel down next. “My apologies, Mr. Castellano,” he wheezed, holding his elbow to his mouth for another hearty round of coughing. “I was fine yesterday, but I woke up with an infernal cold this morning.”

Willa stepped right up to him and raised the back of her hand to test the temperature of his forehead. “No fever. That’s good. But you’d best give your vocal chords a rest today, sir. What is your name?”

“Elmer Beachham, miss.” He coughed again. “Believe me, I’d love to take my cough elsewhere, but I hate leaving you stranded without an angel.
